British citizens enjoy visa exemptions for many countries around the world, but rules do change so it is always essential to check a few weeks before travelling. Often visas (for shorter stays) can be obtained upon arrival at land borders, ports and airports, but be sure this is possible before travelling without one. There may also be other entry conditions, such as having a certain number of months validity on your passport, proof of a return ticket out of the country, or even proof of vaccinations (yellow fever in particular).
Note: visas are required for British citizens to enter Australia (apply here) but EU citizens do not require a visa for travel to any EU country - see this list of EU members; read more about travel within the EU.
To avoid being refused entry upon arrival, consult the embassy or high commission in London for the country(s) that you intend to visit - look for their website in the list below (sometimes visa info can be found under 'consular services').
